“Understanding the Standard of Care”

Home Inspectors may be held to a Standard of Care in the event that their report and/or inspection findings come into question in a legal arena.  If an inspector is shown to have not adequately provided the agreed upon services, he may be found negligent and therefore liable for damages arising from his services.  This presentation by Joshua Kardon is intended to help each inspector understand what the “standard of care” is to allow for better management of individual risk of professional negligence.  This presentation is also intended to help home inspectors decide whether an identified material defect might involve professional negligence on the part of a design professional, requiring further investigation by an appropriate expert.

Joshua Kardon is a structural engineer with a specialty in consulting and testifying regarding professional negligence and the standard of care.

“Greywater Systems”

Christina Bertea is an eco artist, water activist, and union trained plumbing contractor. She served a 4-year apprenticeship in Local 159, Plumbers and Steamfitters and was the first woman admitted in the program. She designed and built a passive solar urban infill rammed earth cottage with radiant heat, taught plumbing at AND’s construction education center in West Oakland, which had classes work on Habitat for Humanity houses in East Oakland. She became a contractor in 1996 and has plumbed quite a few “alternative” houses, including straw bale and rammed earth.

Christina loves to create artworks that spark curiosity and awareness about our relationship to water. She is also interested in the spiritual aspects of water and creates fountains and water features. As a member of the Greywater Guerrillas she helped re-write an improved, more user-friendly greywater code for CA in 2009. With the now mainstream Greywater Action she teaches hands-on greywater and rainwater installation workshops and does installations directly.

We will do a survey of the most common low-tech greywater systems that you may be seeing during your inspections.  Learn what to watch for and maintenance that might be required.  We will also review some of the more complex ”high-tech” systems and how to evaluate them. Bring photos of systems that you have encountered and may have questions about, so we can have a lively discussion.

Attendees earn one ASHI CE.
